The HIT curriculum starts with INTRO TO IMPROV and then breaks into 3 tracks that students can choose from: game of the scene, character, and musical. Many students will choose to do all 3 tracks! Here are more detailed descriptions of the 3 tracks and the courses within each. Questions? Check out our FAQ below or email hbgimprov@gmail.com.

INTRO TO IMPROV (8 weeks)

This is the first class everyone takes. No prior improv or theater experience is necessary. Students will complete the class with a basic understanding of the fundamentals of performing improv comedy. Say “yes” to uncertainty, unleash your creativity within, and make some new friends!

GAME OF THE SCENE 1 (8 weeks)

After taking Intro to Improv, Game of the Scene 1 is the next step to learn more about exploring and heightening the elements that make your scenes funny and interesting!

GAME OF THE SCENE 2 (8 weeks)

Now that you have a basic understanding of game of the scene, it's time to take that and put it into the granddaddy of all along forms: the Harold. Created by the late, great Del Close, The Harold has since become the signature form of the Upright Citizens Brigade. This is the final class in this track before students are eligible to audition for HIT Harold teams.

MUSICAL IMPROV 1 (6 weeks)

After taking Intro to Improv, Musical Improv 1 is the next step to learning more about creating a fully improvised musical! Students will learn the basics of vocal performance and musical structure and how to put improvised dialogue into song!

MUSICAL IMPROV 2 (6 weeks)

This is the final class in this track before students are eligible to audition for HIT musical house teams.

CHARACTER LEVEL 1 (8 weeks)

After taking Intro to Improv, Character 1 is the next step to learning more about creating interesting and layered characters on the spot. Delve deep into the elements that make fictional characters interesting, such as relationship and point-of-view, and learn techniques to create them in improvised scenes.

CHARACTER LEVEL 2 (8 weeks)

This is the final class in this track before students are eligible to audition for character-based HIT house teams.

HIT’S EDUCATION CURRICULUM FAQ

Why are there different tracks?

Imagine if you were trying to learn painting. At some point in your development as an artist  you would  have to choose a specific style to study (such as impressionism or abstract painting.) The same is true here for improv there are different styles of play which require different ways of approach and technique which will be explored in-depth in the classes.

Which path should I take?

Probably the one right in front of you! If you want to be a well-rounded improviser you should take all of our tracks. Rather than wait for a different one to roll around if something's being offered you should take it.

Can I do more than one track?

Yes! Most students do all 3!

Can I skip around? Like, say I take character level 1 and then decide to take musical level 1 instead of character level 2?

Yep, you just can’t skip a level 1 in any track. In other words, you can’t take game level 2 until you’ve taken game level 1, even if you took a level 1 in one of the other tracks
